Col. Edwin Lee White, communications expert 


Col. Edwin Lee White, 93, retired chief of safety and special radio services for the 
Federal Communications Commission and a retired Air Force communications officer, 
died Saturday (Nov. 4, 1989) in Lakeland of congestive heart failure. 

 His son, Frank E. White of Lakeland, said his father was active in communications 
and had been a ham radio operator since he was very young, building his first two-way 
radio when he was 14. 

 ''My father was active in the Hump Pilots Association for about 45 years and was 
author of Ten Thousand Tons by Christmas, a detailed account of the airlift over the 
''hump'' and how they hauled the supplies to South China to achieve their goal by 
Christmas 1943 during World War II,'' he said. 

 A native of Valley City, N.D., Col. White came to St. Petersburg in 1956 and lived at 
460 Coffee Pot Riviera and Bay Towers in St. Petersburg before moving to Lakeland 
in September. 

 While in St. Petersburg, Col. White was an instructor in the 1960s for Abilities. 

 Col. White was in the service from 1917 to 1947. During World War I, he served as a 
naval supply officer and in World War II in the Army Air Forces. He retired in 1955. 

 Col. White was a Fellow of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and a 
member of American Military Engineers. He held several patents on radio transmitters 
and receivers. 

 Besides his son Frank E., Col. White is survived by another son, Lee Thomas, Fairfax, 
Va.; two daughters, Elizabeth Craig, Goshen, Ind., and Isabelle Mouser, Centerville, 
Va.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. 

 David C. Gross Guardian Funeral Homes, Central Avenue Chapel, St. Petersburg, is in 
charge of local arrangements. 

 Services and burial will be held later at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, 
D.C.
