LEAH LUCINDA (ROSS) CARTER

   Second wife of Sidney R. Carter, and second daughter of Thomas Ross and Rachel 
Smith.

   Leah Lucinda "Aunt Sis" as she was called, was born 14 Januarv, 1842, in Gibson 
Countv, Tennessee. She died 12 December, 1912, at Joseph, Sevier County, Utah.

  She and her older sister, Margaret (Peggy) Ann married the same man at the same 
time, 6 March, 1857, in Salt Lake City. Sealed later in the Endowment House. The 
story has it that when Uncle Sid went to Grandfather to ask for the hand of Aunt Sis, 
he was told, "Yes, with one condition,"-if he would take the older sister first.

  It seems to have been the custom at that time-or perhaps he was following the 
pattern of Jacob. Both girls were very industri

ous in sharing the responsibilities of rearing their families.

  Aunt Sis (Leah Lucinda) had eleven children, and in those days that really took much 
planning and doing. Her loom was seldom idle. When it was, her fingers were busy 
knitting, sewing, crocheting, or maybe carding and spinning the wool in preparation for 
weaving cloth to be made into clothing for the family, men, women, and children.

   The four very capable Ross sisters, Margaret (Peggy) Ann, Aunt Sis, Leah Lucinda, 
Mary Elizabeth, and the younger sister, Nancy Jane, all had very nimble well-trained 
fingers that were always busy. In fact, I cannot remember of ever seeing them 
otherwise. When visiting-which they did often-they were usually piecing quilt blocks or 
sewing carpet rags, or knitting-but never just sitting. And, a very noticeable fact to 
everyone was the lack of gossip, one thing that was never permitted in any of their 
homes.

  Aunt Sis, the poor dear, even though she suffered tremendously in every part of her 
body, no word of complaint was ever heard from her, or either of the others no matter 
what the case may be.

  The sisters all reared large families. Beside Aut Sis' family of eleven she raised the 
baby daughter, Harriet (Hattie), of her eld-

est son, James Andrew (Bub) who had the misfortune to lose his wife when Hattie was 
born and was given her mother's name. Her mother was Harriett Carter, daughter of 
William and Martha Carter-no relation.
