Benjamin enrolled at Haverford College in 1844, but left to attend the University of 
Pennsylvania when Haverford College closed in 1845.
	Benjamin was a pharmacist and chemist. He wrote the first book on oil 
refining, entitled "Petroleum". He also wrote "Our Jewels and the Work of Resetting 
Them" and an article on "Aniline Colors" in the appendix of the Encyclopedia 
Britannica.
	With his brother Jacob (1E623), Benjamin built two factories for the 
manufacture of chemicals in 1861 and 1862 (Crew Brothers and Company). They then 
built an oil refinery in 1862, at 23rd and Arch Streets in Phila., Pa.; it burned down in 
May 1864. Thereafter they built the Belmont Oil Works, at the time the best and 
largest in the United States; the oil produced by it was awarded a Medal of Merit at 
the Paris Exposition.
	Benjamin was secretary of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to 
Children from 1876 unti1 1885.
Anna Bartram was the granddaughter of the botanist John Bartram. 
	For a time, Benjamin and Anna lived at 210 N. 17th Street in Phila., Pa. In 
the early 1880's, they moved to Atco, N.J.
	Benjamin and Anna were members of the Religious Society of Friends.
