Jacob attended Richmond Academy in Richmond, Va., Westtown Friends School for 
two years, and Professor Gummere's Academy in Burlington, N.J. Jacob lived most of 
his life in Phila., Pa.
	Jacob was a chemist and a petroleum merchant. In 1851, Jacob went to the 
West Indies for eight months. In 1852, Jacob's store was in Kensington, Phila., Pa., at 
Frankford Road and Phoenix Street.
	With his brother Jacob (1E623), Benjamin built two factories for the 
manufacture of chemicals in 1861 and 1862 (Crew Brothers and Company). They then 
built an oil refinery in 1862, at 23rd and Arch Streets in Phila., Pa.; it burned down in 
May 1864. Thereafter they built the Belmont Oil Works, at the time the best and 
largest in the United States; the oil produced by it was awarded a Medal of Merit at 
the Paris Exposition.
	By 1868, Jacob was in the mercantile business, first on Margaretta Street, 
and, by 1870, on Water Street, in Phila., Pa. In 1870 he formed J.L. Crew and 
Company and then Crew, Moore, and Levick, on South 2nd Street in Phila., Pa. Jacob 
was a member of the Board of Managers of the SPCA, of the Franklin Institute, and of 
the College of Pharmacy.

remains and turned them over to underaker. there was no death cert, letter dtd 7 Jan 
1903
