Charles was a member of the Religious Society of Friends. He served in the Civil War 
with the Indiana Infantry. Military records describe him as five feet, nine inches, in 
height, with fair complexion, grey eyes, and light hair. He was shot in the jaw, and this 
injury affected him for life. When Charles returned from the war, he entered into the 
plastering business.
	In 1877, Charles became unemployed in his plastering trade, and he went to 
live with Martha's parents on their farm, where he worked as a farm employee for 
George Stephenson. Shortly thereafter, he moved back to Richmond, Ind., where in 
late April of 1878 he was shot by two of Martha's brothers. The latter two had waited 
for him at the Ninth Street bridge in that city. When arrested, the Stephenson brothers 
claimed that they had ordered Charles to leave town as a consequence of their 
conclusion that he had seduced Martha's and their fourteen-year-old sister while he 
had been living at the Stephenson farm. Charles, having recovered from the shooting, 
was arrested and charged with bastardy on the complaint of his fourteen-year-old 
sister-in-law. In his defense, Charles asserted that the two Stephenson brothers had 
seduced their sister. Charles was bound over to circuit court on $1,000 bond, the 
surety being Joseph VanSant (see 1E76T).
	This much seems to be accepted: Charles Maule's fourteen-year-old sister-
in-law gave birth to a child in March of 1878; the child died during the summer of 
1878. The bastardy charges against Charles were dropped because under the laws of 
Indiana at that time bastardy was a suit for the support of a child and could not be 
brought on account of a deceased child. The Stephenson brothers were brought to 
trial on assault charges, and were found guilty. One brother was sentenced to jail for 
two years and subjected to a $50 fine; it is not known what happened to the other 
brother.
	The newspaper reported--in an article headlined "Mauled"--the details of the 
case with a great presumption that Charles was guilty. Nothing was reported about the 
inconsistencies between the story given by Charles' fourteen-year-old sister-in-law and 
the timing of Charles' arrival at the Stephenson farm; it appears he arrived there about 
the time she became pregnant. The newspaper merely stated that "there appears to 
be two sides to the story." Beyond that, the newspaper stated Charles "got even less 
than he deserved" and that the Stephenson brothers "deserve gold medals for their 
conduct." No one seems to have investigated whether the Stephenson girl was 
"covering up" for a neighbor boy, and there is nothing else that is known about the 
incident.
	Shortly after the incident concerning his sister-in-law, Charles and his family 
moved to Kansas, where he founded Strong City, Kans. Charles also ran a store there. 
Charles was the first mayor of Strong City, and then served in the Kansas legislature 
and on the Board of Commissioners of Chase Co., Kan.
   Mary Ann was a tailor; she was a member of the Catholic Church. Charles and Mary 
Ann had no children.
	In 1912, Charles and Mary Ann moved to Artesia, Tex., and in 1915 to 
Houston, Tex. Charles is buried in Strong City Cemetery, Strong City, Kan. After he 
died, Mary Ann lived in Grand Rapids, Mich.

CHARLES I. MAULE, general merchant, was born in Wayne County, Ind., March 26, 
1846. His father died when he was a year old. Three years later his mother took him to 
Chester County, Pa., and bound him out to a farmer, with whom he continued until 
1861. He then returned to Indiana. In October, 1863, he enlisted as a private in 
Company F., One Hundred and Twenty-fourth Regiment Indiana Volunteers. The 
regiment was assigned to the Twenty-third Army Corps, army of the Cumberland. Mr. 
Maule was afterwards promoted to Corporal and Sergeant, and participated in the 
battle of Buzzard's Roost, the campaign and siege of Atlanta, the battles of Pulaski, 
Spring Hill, Franklin, and the second battle of Nashville. The regiment then proceeded 
by land and water to Moorehead, North Carolina, and joined the army of General 
Sherman in its march through that State, and was afterward stationed at Charlotte and 
Greensboro, North Carolina. He mustered out at the latter place in October, 1865. Mr. 
Maule then started to obtain an education, having had poor opportunities for doing so 
in his youth. He afterward learned the trade of a plasterer, which he followed most of 
the time until he came to Kansas. In November, 1878, he located at Strong City and 
engaged in merchandising, which business he has since followed. He carries a large 
stock of dry goods, clothing, boots and shoes, glass and queensware, etc. He does a 
large and prosperous business. Mr. Maule has been a member of the City Council of 
Strong City two years, and is now serving his second term as Mayor of the city. He 
also hold the office of Treasurer of Falls Township. Mr. Maule is a member of Angola 
Lodge, No. 58, I. O. O. F., a member of J. W. Geary Post, No. 15, G. A. R., and a 
member of Strong City Assembly, No. 2,578, Knights of Labor. He married Miss Mattie 
A. Stephenson, of Wayne County, Indiana, May, 1870, by which marriage he has had 
seven children, of whom George S., Frank K., Joseph V., Alexander G., Llewellyn and 
Mattie M. are living.
