Mary was a member of the Franklin & Marshall College faculty, teaching elocutia.
Anselm's father was a prominent Lebanon Co., clergyman and a descendant
of Governor Heister. In 1887, Anselm graduated with a B.S. from Lebanon Valley
College. He graduated with a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College in 1889 and in
1892 obtained his M.A. from Columbia. He then studied theology at Union Theological
Seminary and the Eastern Theological Seminary. He earned his degree in 1894 from
the Theological Seminary of the Reformed Church.
From 1890 to 1892, Anselm was a professor at Palatinate College. In 1892,
Anselm was appointed instructor of Mathematics at Franklin & Marshall College. In
1894, he was elected assistant professor of Mathematics and German. In 1896-98, he
took a year's leave to study at Columbia University under a Fellowship in Sociology
and Political Science. He returned to organize the new Department of Political and
Social Sciences. From 1912-1927 he was also Registrar of graduate courses.
Anselm was a member of the Americas Economics Assn., Amer. Pol. Sc.
Assn., Amer. Sociological Assn., Amer. Acad. of Pol. & Social Sciences, Acad. of Pol.
Sci., Nat'l. Municipal League, Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Kappa Alpha and president of the
Community Science Assn. In 1913, he was awarded an Honory Degree of Doctor of
Science by Ursinus College. He was a great teacher, recognized as a scholar, and
highly respected because of his unusual ability, clarity and forcefulness in instruction.
He wrote numerous articles, and was Assoc. Ed. of the Reformed Church Review.
Anselm died of a heart attack. His sudden death was considered a distinct loss to the
College.
Mary and Anselm had two children:
