1981 book:
Edwin was a storekeeper, an iron founder, and a press maker.  He went to California 
in the gold rush, where he kept a store.  As a result of being robbed, an illness, and a 
burned-out store, Edwin returned to Pa. to marry.  He went back to San Francisco, 
was burned-out several times and eventually returned to Phila. and Lancaster Co.
(Slater's father Jeremiah Brown was a brother of Hannah Maule who married Daniel 
Maule; thus Edwin & Mary were second cousins.)

Britain Twp., Lanc. Co., Pa.

Edwin and Mary were second cousins

IN 1850 census he is not with his mother and brother in the house in Northern 
Liberties in Phila
1860 census, in 15th ward of Phila, with two servants, and children Sarah B, age 4, 
Hannah age 2 and Joshua age 3 months, all b Pa., he is a machinist. I think the 
"Sarah" is Slater Brown.

went to San Francisco for the Gold Rush, returned, married, went back to SF. Had 
boarders there. contracted Asiatic cholera but followed advice of Native American 
woman and survived. One of his boarders became ill, Edwin's wife took care of him, 
and when he recovered he gave her a valuable painting.
The firm Morgan Orr build the coining press for the San Francisco mint. This was his 
brother Joshua's company.
Per letter from his wife, before they were married, he went to California to seek gold, 
he was poor, he was robbed while in SF, his store was burnt out, and he was near 
death from illness.
