Maris was a member of the Religious Society of Friends. He was a well liked member 
of the community. He did not marry. Maris died in a freak accident, when the flywheel 
on a threshing machine broke when he applied the brake after a belt had fallen off the 
machine; a piece of the flywheel flew off and fractured his skull.
