on google books, on July 28, 1864 he was on the USS Elfin, which came up the river 
and then sent in the cutter with a dispatch to Johnsonville
It also gives the report of Acting Master J. L. Bryant, former commander of the USS 
Undine, on the morning of 30th of October he weighed anchor at the request of the 
transport Anna to convoy her to below the railroad bridge on the Tennessee River. He 
did so, and then headed upstream to Johnsonville. At the foot of Sandy Island he 
heard artillery so turned downstream. Abreast of Paris Landing he stopped in response 
to a man on shore hailing the gunboat, and came under fire, which he returned. Four 
shots came through the casemates, killing Acting Ensign Neave, and another, and 
wounding 2 who later died.
