Helene "Penny" Dodd Sherwood, 88, died on Sunday, January 18, 2009, at home in 
San Francisco, CA.
She was born June 21, 1920, in Cincinnati, OH, to Harold and Charlotte Neave. 

After graduating from Western Hills High School in 1938, she attended Smith College 
in Northampton, MA, where she earned a BA in American Studies. She was a member 
of the golf and swim teams, and pursued her interest in journalism. 
She met her future husband, Edward Millfield Dodd, on a boat trip to Havana, Cuba, in 
1939. 

During World War II, Penny moved to New York City where she attended Katharine 
Gibbs School and worked for the United Nations Information Office, a clearinghouse 
for war news. She married Edward Dodd on June 1, 1946, when he returned from 
service in the Pacific. During their marriage of almost 30 years, they made their home 
in Louisville, KY, St. Clair, MI, and briefly in Boxford, MA. They had three daughters.

After the death of her husband Edward in 1975, she married Bernath P. Sherwood on 
February 14, 1977. They lived in Spring Lake, MI. 

In 2005, after the death of her husband Bernath, she moved to San Francisco to live 
near her daughter.
Penny was always active in her communities. 

In St. Clair, she started Junior Great Books in the middle school, and was a founder 
and active member of an adult Great Books Club. She was a leader for the Girl 
Scouts, Campfire Girls, and 4-H. 

She owned a small book shop for several years and belonged to various book clubs, 
attesting to her love of reading.

In Spring Lake, she served as trustee for the Grand Haven Area Community 
Foundation for six years, and as president of the Smith College Club of Western 
Michigan. She helped found a branch of the Chautauqua Institute in Grand Haven, 
volunteered for Hospice of N. Ottawa Co., tutored elementary school students, and 
helped host the annual Habitat for Humanity House Tour. 

Penny was an avid gardener, creating beautiful flower borders and rock gardens 
wherever she lived. She loved competitive games, and excelled at golf, frequently 
winning club championships. For many summers she was the first mate on her husband 
Edward's sailboats, the Lucky Penny and then the Down East. She loved sailing and 
the beauty of Lake Huron's North Channel area, with its rocky, wild blueberry-covered 
islands. 

Penny was a serious student of her faith. Broad-minded in her outlook, she sought to 
understand Christianity from a variety of perspectives. She composed many private 
writings related to her faith. 

Penny also had a light-hearted side. She was known to her friends and family for her 
humor, sparkle, warmth, and wit.

She is survived by her sister: Nancy Jones of Hollister, CA; her brother: Harold Neave, 
Jr. of Mount Morris, IL; her three daughters: Nancy Dodd Uhl of Bayfield, CO, 
Elizabeth McIntyre Dodd of San Francisco, CA, and Genevieve Dodd Barhaugh of 
Choteau, MT; and six grandchildren: Jacob Uhl, Genevieve Uhl, Charlotte Boddy, 
David Boddy, Helene Barhaugh, and Kip Barhaugh. 

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Monday, January 26, 2009, at Calvary 
Presbyterian Church, 2515 Fillmore Street, San Francisco.
