"Death Summons J.T. Maule Has Ben Prominent In The Affairs of the City for More
Than Figty Years Friends of the Maule family were shocked to learn Tuesday
afternoon of the sudden death of J.T. Maule. The 29th day of September Mr. Maule
who until that time had been in his usual health, suffered a stroke, and for a time it
seemed he would not recover. However Mr. Maule's strong constitution and naturally
buoyant disposition, coupled with the best of care, enabled him to so far recover that
he has been up and around his home all winter. While not able to be on the street, Mr.
Maule was stressed each day, enjoyed a chat with friends and kept abreast of the
Political situation in which he was always interested. On Tuesday Mr. Maule was not
feeling as well as usual. The doctor and nurse were called about noon, but the end
came about 2:30. J.T. Maule was one of the real pioneers of the town, being in his
78th year and having spent between 50 and 55 of those years in Dell Rapids. His
trade as a blacksmith made him well acquainted with everyone in the county
surrounding Dell Rapids. As a member of the city Council for many years she had an
active part in civic affairs. Funeral arrangements are pending word from his children.

------------------------------------------- Funeral Service For J.T. Maule Funeral services were
held for J.T. Maule Sunday, January 22, 1939, at 1:30 o'clock from the home and at
2:00 at the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. Kildahl. Interment took place in the Dell
Rapids Cemetery with the I.O.O.F. Lodge conducting the service at the grave.
Pallbearers were Dr. M.C. Dietrich, Will Walters, Walter Crisp, jr., D.H. Richardson,
Lloyd Richardson, and J.M. Cotter. Honorary pallbearers were: W.G. Milne, Isaac
Williams, C.A. Williams, W.H. Beto, and Andrew Nesby. James Thomas Maule was
born in Painsville, Ohio, May 4, 1860, of Quaker parentage, in which faith he was
raised to manhood. He was 78 years of age at the time of his death. In 1882 he was
married to Zolia Bardell. Six children were born to this union, four of whom are living:
Claude Maule of Winner, South Dakota; Mabel Maule of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Paul
Gillette of Buffalo, New York; and Mrs. Howell Jones of Portland, Oregon. Mr. Maule
has been in business in the same location for over 50 years with the exception of the
last three winters which were spent in Portland, with his two daughters. Mr. Maule
never had a sick day during his lifetime until September 29, when he suffered a stroke
and from then on his health was fair until January 17 when he suffered a second
stroke and lived but a few hours. Mr. Maule had been a resident of Dell Rapids for 55
years and throughout his entire lifetime was a strong force in civic improvements. He
was a member of the city Council for 30 consecutive years and it was during this time
our present Park was purchased. He also was a lifetime member of the I.O.O.F. He
always gladly gave help to any person in need and numbered his friends among his
acquaintances. Besides the widow and four children Mr. Maule is survived by three
brothers, Fred Maule of David city, Nebraska; Joshua Maule of California; Walter
Maule of Omaha, Nebraska; one sister of Anaheim, California. Dell Rapids Tribune
