John was an attorney. By 1876 he was in partnership with one Conner, who in 1879 
embezzled $2,000 from the law firm of Conner and Maule. John borrowed money from 
Joshua Maule (1E87) and later corresponded with him about the debt. John also was a 
district attorney in Lincoln, Neb., and a local judge or magistrate.
    Mary was a contributor of special articles and was metropolitan correspondent for 
the Denver Times, New York Herald, New York Sun, New York Times, and New York 
Tribune. She wrote short stories and articles for leading magazines. She was active in 
the women's suffrage campaign, speaking and working for the amendment in several 
states. She conducted a vice crusade for the New York American in 1918. In 1920, 
Mary wrote "A Prairie Schooner Princess", which has been published in many editions, 
and which is the story of John's parents' family and their migration from Ohio to 
Nebraska (see 1EE43). Mary also wrote "The Little Knight of the X Bar B" (1910), 
"The Bryne Girls"" (1921), and "God's Anointed" (1921).
   In 1900, John and his family moved to Denver, Col., and in 1905 they moved to New 
York, N.Y. After John died, Mary lived in California.
