In 1889 or 1890, William left Ohio and went to California. William worked as a clerk 
and manager at Flaven's, a men's furnishing and general store on Kearney Street in 
San Francisco, Cal. Later he worked at a haberdashery on Montgomery Street in San 
Francisco, Cal., until the store was destroyed in the earthquake and fire of Apr. 18, 
1906. After the earthquake destroyed his place of business, William ran a coffee 
route, and when that enterprise failed finacially, he did carpentry in San Francisco and 
Alaska. He later worked a wire-insulating machine at the Standard Underground Cable 
Co. in Oakland, Cal. For a time, he was an assistant chemist in the chemistry 
laboratory of the Henry Cowell Lime and Cement Company.
	Despite not having attended college, William was very knowledgeable, 
being able to give the scientific names of flora and fauna. He was a member of the 
Congregational Church.
	William and his family lived on O'Farrell St., San Francisco, Cal., and 
thereafter at 2205 Fulton St., San Francisco, Cal. Later they moved to Alameda, Cal.
	William died of tuberculosis, after spending a long time in an Oakland 
hospital. In accordance with his wishes, his ashes were scattered from Mt. Diablo in 
California.
