William married Ellen Jane Regnault on August 1, 1849.

Besides his Masonic affiliation, William was also a member of the Richmond 
Encampment, No. 2, of the Knights Templar, which also met at the historic Mason's 
Hall on Franklin Street in Richmond.

During the Civil War, he served as Captain of Company "E" of the "Richmond City 
Battalion" of local defense troops, which became officially known as the 25th Virginia 
Infantry Battalion. It was organized August 15, 1862, for six months, for service in and 
around Richmond. In January and February 1863, the battalion was "re-mustered for 
the war." It took part in Lee's retreat from Richmond and was engaged at Sailor's 
Creek on April 6, 1865.

At the time of his death, from "consumption", William was a merchant and living at 317 
E. Main Street in Richmond. 

His marker's birthdate and deathdate information is incorrect.
