Evelyn Plants, 100, died Sunday, September 20, 2015, in Southmont of Presbyterian 
SeniorCare, Washington. She was born in Powderhorn, Colo., a daughter of Jess and 
Helen Phelps. She was raised on a ranch in Powderhorn with her 10 siblings. In 1933, 
she married Earl Plants. They then moved to Washington, having spent their 
honeymoon hitchhiking from Colorado to Pennsylvania. She lived in Washington and 
its environs for most of her life. For most of that time, she was a devoted member of 
Chartiers Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, Washington. Surviving are two daughters, 
Helen (Frank) Shaffer and Patricia (the late David) Butterfield; two grandchildren, 
Diane and David (Donna) Shaffer; a granddaughter-in-law, Nancy (the late James); 
three great-grandchildren, Gena Knight (Erik), Jessica Weigner and Joseph Shaffer; 
six great-great-grandchildren, Emma Shaffer, Hannah, Allura and William Knight and 
Joelle and Julia Weigner; a brother, Duane Phelps; two sisters, Leatha Vader and Fay 
Vader; and numerous nieces and nephews. Deceased are her parents, Jess and Helen 
Phelps; her husband, Earl Plants; an infant son, Richard Plants; a grandson, James 
Shaffer; two brothers, Vern and Lawrence Phelps; and five sisters, Ethel Beitler, Elsie 
Oliver, Edith Emery, Viola Lord and Mildred Ewers. An unassuming woman, Mrs. Plants' 
wisdom and kindness made her a cherished friend to everyone who knew her. She will 
be deeply missed.
