After traveling with her Air Corps family through several assignments in the United
States and the Philippine Islands in the 1920's and 30's, and while attending
Centenary College, studying fashion Design, she met and married her husband, Air
Corps 2nd Lt. Leonard J. Barrow Jr. at Barksdale Army Air Field, Shreveport, La in

States and Hawaii until the 1970 retirement to New Iberia, the family home of her
husband, Air Force Colonel "Sug" Barrow. Helen was known to her many friends in
New Iberia and around the Country as a dedicated USAF wife of 32 years and a
willing, generous volunteer of her time and talents. During her career as an Air Force
wife, Helen volunteered over 2500 hours as a Red Cross hospital volunteer.
Additionally, she worked weekly as a social services volunteer. In New Iberia, she
continued her volunteerism at Iberia General Hospital for most of her 34 years here. .
After heart surgery, she also served as a mentor at the hospital's Cardiac
Rehabilitation center. She was a guide at the Shadows for many years as well. Active
in the Little Acorn Garden Club, and various social organizations, she was a former
Grand Duchess of the Krewe of Iberians when her husband was the Krewe's King. In
her childhood years,
Helen loved horseback riding, and during the 1930's at Ft. Stotsenberg in the
Philippines, she and her sister used to exercise the numerous polo ponies kept by their
riders there. She also enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and was very socially active
throughout her life. A convert to Catholicism, she was a devout member of St. Peter's
Parish and after her husband's death in 2006, Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
