Evelyn Newton, age 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 3, 2002, in 
Holladay, Utah. 

Evelyn was born April 7, 1919, in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the third of four children 
born to Charles William and Amy Rumel Newton. Her family lived in Woods Cross, 
Utah, where Evelyn rode the Bamberger Railroad to attend Davis High School. As a 
girl she often went with her father to his office, where she would run errands for all the 
men in the office. It was the Depression and she was never paid for her work, but she 
learned how to make an office run smoothly and how to work hard, which proved to be 
skills that she perfected in her later life. 

Evelyn also enjoyed a warm, loving relationship with her mother and her sister, Elinor. 
Evelyn and Elinor loved to recall the days when they sang together in the ward choir 
as girls. While Evelyn attended the University of Utah, she lived with her older sister 
in the Phi Mu Sorority House. 

Evelyn worked for many years in the offices of Utah Power and Light, with the Bureau 
of Reclamation, and did taxes for H&R Block. She was also an Herbal Life and Vanda 
Make-up distributor for over 25 years. Evelyn worked in a time when women were not 
easily advanced, and sometimes she worked two or more jobs at a time, but she was 
always determined and self-reliant. Hard work and thrift were very important to her, 
and she was always pleased that she was able to buy a lot in the Upland Terrace area 
of Salt Lake County and build a home there as one of the first residents in the 
neighborhood more than 40 years ago. 

She was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 
(Mormon), and Evelyn was particularly dedicated as a visiting teacher. She liked to do 
things for others and especially liked caring for family and friends. 

She is survived by a brother-in-law, Edward (Eddie) Trzaska, a sister-in-law, Wanda 
W. Newton, and a niece, Ruth Newton Sweet. She was also survived by many loving 
neighbors and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Elinor 
Newton Trzaska, and her brothers Richard Rumel and Charles Francis Newton. 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the East Mill 
Creek Stake Center, 3103 East 3600 South, where friends may call Saturday morning 
from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., prior to the services. Interment will follow at the Salt Lake 
City Cemetery.
