He spent his entire life serving the United States in the US Army.He fought in World
War II in both Europe and the Pacific. He was seriously wounded several times and
had a steel plate in his head and a steel hip.He later served during the Korean War.A
true hero and patriot, he was also an absolutely entertaining man to be around and
was our favorite uncle. When we were young and he visited us while on leave,we
called him "Uncle Money Bags"because he came to our home with a pocketful of
change. After a sufficient amount of pleading, he would reach into his pocket, scoop
out his coins and throw them, with all his force, from the kitchen into the living room
(there was a dining room and hallway between the two rooms, so he had a strong
pitch). We all ran to the living room and each of us gathered up as many of the
precious coins as we could, all of us satisfied and talking about the candy and comic
books we could buy the next day.He retired to his ranch in Cedaredge CO, and
enjoyed peace the rest of his life.
He was ranked Captain at the time of his retirement, June 18, 1926-June 30, 1957.His
awards and decorations were listed on his record as follows:
Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars;American Campaign
Medal;World War II Victory Medal;Phillipine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service
Star;Army of Occupation Medal with Japan Clasp;Korean Service Medal with two
Bronze Service Stars;United Nations Service Medal;National Defense Service
Medal;eight Overseas Bars;Phillipine Independence Ribbon; Republic of Korea
Presidential Unit Citation.
