The White Bear Now Soars in The Sky
Leland Scowcroft Swaner, Jr., known fondly as ""Tad,"" passed away Jan. 21, 2016. 
A rare and gentle soul, he was 63 years young at the time of his death due to cardiac 
arrest.
Born in Salt Lake City to Leland S. and Paula M. Swaner on Sept. 20, 1952, Swaner 
lived his life far and deep in the outdoor West, and among Utah's mountains and 
wilderness he considered home. After graduating from Skyline High School in 1971, 
and following studies at the University of Utah, he resided for 25 years in Park City, 
where he spent time with his wife, Diana Sabino, and daughter, Anthony Alexandra. 
He devoted himself to environmental, arts, and educational causes in both business 
and stewardship roles. This culminated 23 years ago when he co-founded, along with 
his mother and siblings, the Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter, an environmental 
awareness and education center covering 12,000 acres of open space in Park City's 
Kimball Junction area.
The EcoCenter was but one organization he spent time and energy toward in efforts to 
improve his community. He also served on the boards of Utah Opera, the Norwegian 
Outdoor Exploration Center in Park City and Natural History Museum of Utah in Salt 
Lake City. He supported the Park City Institute and its Rose Wagner Performing Arts 
Center, plus the Park City Museum. Swaner loved Utah and its people as his own 
blood and bones.
He devoted years of study to Native American cultures, spending extensive time 
among the North American First Nations whom he revered and respected. Many he 
traveled with revered and respected him in return, calling him ""White Bear,"" and 
trusting him with their sacred traditions. He held a deep affinity for The Eagle, 
integrating native traditions into his own way of life with elegance and gentle warmth.
An artist whose hand was never far from brush or clay, Tad created many paintings 
and sculpture works. One he was most proud of was an iridescent, ""Cosmic Blue 
Moose,"" made of cobalt especially for a Kimball Art Center fundraiser auction. An 
expert outdoorsman who loved to ski, when skiing with beginners among his friends, 
he often took time to shepherd them down the mountain. He found adventure at every 
level of expertise, almost always and without effort.
In addition to his wife Diana and daughter Alexandra Anthony, Tad is survived by his 
loving mother Paula Swaner, his sister Paula Sargetakis and her spouse Joe 
Sargetakis, his brother Sumner Swaner and his spouse Carol Nichols, and his nieces 
and nephews; Pauline, Mike, Pamela and Sumner Grey. 
As per his wishes, Tad was cremated Jan. 29, with his ashes to be scattered from the 
open window of a plane flying above Glacier National Park, followed this coming 
spring with a sunrise service in the Native American tradition.
Family and friends will gather in celebration of Tad's life Wednesday, Feb. 3, in Deer

Not clear how Alexandra Anthony fits in. There is an Alexandra Anthony who is an 
actress (imdb) on whose pages Diana Sabino puts comments. Bio says she was raised 
in Park City but says father is a radiologist. Per publicrecords.com, she is related to 
Scott Christopher Anthony, Anne Anthony, Diana Swaner, Douglas Anthony, Maureen 
Anthony, Rod Anthony, Steven Anthony, and also is Alexandra Fulton
On fb is friends with my friend Leland Scowcroft Swaner III
obit of Catherine (Sisia) Sabino has her as mother of Diana, and grandmother of 
Alexandra Fulton and Leland Swaner (among others). As Diana is not mother of Leland 
(III), the list of grandchildren includes stepgrandchildren, so I'm guessing Alexandra is 
daughter of someone other than Leland Jr.
