Deceased Name: BARBARA R. CRITTENDEN PIANIST, TEACHER
Barbara R. Crittenden, 83, Chapel Hill, N.C., formerly of Watertown, died Jan. 3 at 
University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill, following a three-year battle with 
cancer. 

An accomplished pianist, Mrs. Crittenden taught music at Hathaway Brown School, 
Shaker Heights, Ohio, for three and a half years during World War II. 

After the war, she continued her own piano education for 25 years with Nadia 
Rosenburg, a renowned concert pianist and teacher. 

Born Nov. 25, 1917, in Buffalo, she was a daughter of Harlow and Elizabeth Thornton 
Rockwell. Her father worked in the New York Central Railroad office. 

She was a graduate of Utica Free Academy and received undergraduate and master's 
degrees from Smith College, Northampton, Mass., in 1939 and 1941, respectively. 

She married Frank Cazenove Crittenden on Feb. 23, 1942, at the Watertown home of 
her parents. Mr. Crittenden is a World War II veteran of the Army's First Armored 
Division and had seen duty at Pine Camp, Africa and Italy. 

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Elizabeth Rockwell Crittenden, 
Manhattan; a son and his wife, Louis Cazenove and Jenny Crittenden, Chapel Hill; a 
sister, Mary Lee Rockwell Fuller, Long Island, and three grandsons. 

Arrangements were with Walker's Funeral Home, Chapel Hill. Edition: St. Lawrence
