Janet Ruth Sturgeon, 54, died on June 5, 2004 after a prolonged battle with cancer. 
She was born on July 6, 1949 to Leon and Willis Ransbarger in Oroville, Calif. She 
married Joe Sturgeon on Dec. 17, 1972. Together they had three children. She was a 
resident of Susanville for 12 years. She was involved in many aspects of music both in 
the community and Susanville Church of the Nazarene where her husband serves as 
pastor. Sturgeon loved children and teaching them music was her passion and joy. 
She directed numerous choirs including SonShine Singer, Susanville Youth Choir with 
Maryel Roberts and the worship ensembles at her church. She served as children's 
director, worship leader and music co-ordinator and piano accompanist for numerous 
churches and ministries over the last 33 years. She directed musical and dramas for 
churches and communities from as far as Kansas City, Mo. Her greatest joy was to 
watch how music transformed the spirit and intellect of children and adults. Sturgeon 
loved Jesus Christ and served Him faithfully with her talents. Sturgeon is survived by 
her husband Pastor Joe Sturgeon of Susanville Church of the Nazarene and her three 
children, Jeremiah, Jimi Rene and Jameson. She is also survived by her mother and 
father, Leon and Willis Ransbarger of Oroville, her sister Joyce Star of Salinas, her 
brother George Ransbarger of Oroville as well as numerous nieces, nephews and 
cousins. Two memorial funds have been established in Sturgeon's memory. A college 
fund for her son Jameson and the Friends of Janet Sturgeon Memorial Cancer 
Treatment Fund. It was Sturgeon's wish that the fund established to help her with her 
medical needs continue after her death to help others facing cancer. Memorial 
services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 19 at the Susanville
