	In 1940, William lived in Larchmont, N.Y.
	William was curator of Egyption art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 
New York, N.Y. He studied at St. George's School, Newport, R.I., and at Princeton 
University, graduating in 1924. He earned a Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and 
his Ph.D. He specialized in archeology, and was an instructor at Princeton. In 1927, 
he joined the staff of the Metropolitan Museum, under whose auspices he went on a 
ten-year expedition to Eygpt, working at the excavation at Lisht and Thebes. He 
became assistant curator in 1936. During World War II, he was a lieutenant-
commander in the Navy. In 1952, he became curator. Thereafter he twice went to 
Eygpt, once as American representative on the International Commission for 
Preservation of Nubian Monuments. He wrote "The Scepter of Eygpt" and chapters in 
the revised edition of Cambridge Ancient History and [see letter from Metropolitan to 
JEM]
At the time he died, William also had two grandchildren, but additional information is 
lacking.
	Funeral services for William were held on July 13, 1963, at the Frank E. 
Campbell Funeral Chapel.

There is an article in vol 2, 1963, ed of Journal of the American Research Center, on 
jstor. It is a tribute to him. provides info, incl bdate, grew up in Warrenton, Va., where 
his parents indulged a passion for horses tht he did not share (but his brother John 
did). His father William C Hayes was born in England and kept his British citizenship, 
thoug living mostly in the US. His mother, Helen Hawthorne Maule, came from Phila,  
and he attended Penn Charter and then St. George's in Newport, where he won the 
George Gordon King medal in advanced Greek. In 1920 he entered Princeton, 
travelled in Scotland, England, France, Italy, and participated in the Univ of Mich's 
excavations at Carthage. Twice awarded a Carnegie Fellowship, he earned an M.A.

28 Apr 1926 NY TImes has engagement announcement Mr and Mrs Henry Clayton 
Blackwell of 167 West State Street, Trenton, dtr Katherine Middendorf Blackwell, to 
William Christopher Hayes Jr., so of Mrs. Sidney Hall of NYC. She grad from Oldfield's 
School in Md. in 1924, made debut in Baltimore the following winter. He is grandson of 
Mr and Mrs Francis I Maule of Philadelphia. Graduate Princeton in 1924, mbr of 
Princeton Club and Princeton Quadrangle Club
From findagrave entry for Katherine Middendorf Blackwell, she married Ulric Dahlgren 
Jr in 1928 and T Stockton Gaines in 1933. It appears the wedding to Hayes did not 
take place.
27 Oct 1932  NY Times has article on marriage to Mary Isom, dtr of Mr and Mrs 
Edward W Isom, who received cables from London announcing marriage of their dtr 
that morning to William Christopher Hayes, son of Mrs Sidney Hall.
9 May 1942 NY Times item, marriage to Mrs. Elise Scheffler, by Rev Russell W Sapp 
of Asbury Methodist Church, Arnold, Md. He is serving as Lt in the Navy. Attended St.
