1981 book:
	After Elizabeth died, her mother took Patricia Ann to her home in San 
Francisco, Cal., because, as she later said, she wanted to safeguard the baby's 
estate. John, described as a "Mahwah, N.J., sportsman", took Patricia Ann from his 
mother-in-law's home and was arrested on "child stealing" charges when the airplane 
returning him home landed in Chicago, Ill. He was immediately released on bond, the 
judge saying that "a father has a right to his own child and there is no reason for 
issuing a warrant charging child stealing."
	 Nothing else is known about the custody fight or of John and his daughter.

newspaper article in 3 Aug 1937 Hammond, Ind., Times explains he was arrested when 
his chartered plane landed in Chicago, police were waiting for a warrant from San 
Francisco. Child's maternal grandmother is Mrs. Charlotte E. Pendergast. "Hayes, who 
traced his family back to William the Conqueror and has inherited thousands of dollars, 
was angry and indignant." "His mother, he said, promised he could use all of the 
$15,000 she has in the bank to fight for Patricia Ann's custody. In addition, he said, 
he has inherited more money from his  maternal grandmother, Mrs. Francis I. Maule of 
Philadelphia." Patricia Ann is 28 months (b June 1935), and was in St. Vincent's 
orphanage. He married Elizabeth Pendergast six years ago, and last February while on 
a business trip to New Orleans, learned from his wife she was instituting divorce 
proceedings. He returned to his mother's estaet at Compere Park, NJ. Then he had a 
premonition and called his wife in San Francisco and they said she had died the day 
before. She left $30,000. Saved in file.
