(12-26) 04:00 PST Woodside -- J. Emott Caldwell, a former Woodside businessman 
and philanthropist, died at home Thursday of complications from a stroke at the age of 
84. 

Mr. Caldwell was born in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and attended Williams College. After 
traveling abroad for a year, he began work in the advertising business in New York 
City. He also took an interest in his family's jewelry business, J. E. Caldwell & Co. of 
Philadelphia, which was founded by his great-great grandfather. 

During World War II, he joined the Navy as a pilot. He became a flight instructor and 
later served as a pilot to Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz. After the war, Mr. Caldwell flew 
his Beechcraft Bonanza across the country several times and also became an avid 
glider pilot. 

In 1950, he moved his family to Atherton and acquired a general store. Caldwell's 
General Store sold everything from fine imported wines to rib roasts, bulk nails and 
horse feed. He also wrote a popular newsletter called "Crossroads Enterprise," a lively 
collection of stories about the Peninsula as well as plugs for his merchandise. 

Mr. Caldwell was a major benefactor of the Rudolf Steiner Institute, which aids the 
Waldorf schools, and also the Jane Goodall Foundation. And he was a financial 
supporter of the San Francisco choral group Chanticleer. 

For many years, he delivered weekly readings of technical books for the nonprofit 
organization Recordings for the Blind. He served several terms on the Woodside 
school board. He also sang in a local church choir and in a barbershop quartet. 

Mr. Caldwell's survivors include six children: Hannah "Haydi" Sowerwine of 
Kathmandu, Nepal; James E. Caldwell Jr. of Woodside; Julie C. Tave of Dubai, United 
Arab Emirates; Anne Caldwell of Seattle; Jonathan Anthony Caldwell of Stratham, 
N.H.; Sarah Caldwell of Sacramento; 12 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ Church in Portola Valley. 
The family requests donations in Mr. Caldwell's memory be made to Chanticleer, 1182 
Market St., Suite 216, San Francisco, CA 94102.
