Deceased Name: J. MORTON CALDWELL, 69, JEWELER
J. Morton Caldwell, 69, retired chairman of the board of the J.E. Caldwell Co., died 
Monday at Indian River Memorial Hospital near Vero Beach, Fla. A former resident of 
Bryn Mawr and Malvern, he lived in Vero Beach. 

Mr. Caldwell was a direct descendant of James Emott Caldwell, who established a 
jewelry business at 163 Chestnut St. in 1839, and he was raised in the business that 
lived up to its slogan, "Jewelers to Philadelphia and the World." 

He was vice chairman of the company when it was merged into the Dayton- Hudson 
Corp., a Minneapolis-based merchandising firm, in 1968. He was named chairman 
when the merger was completed. 

Under his direction, the company operated its main store at Juniper and Chestnut 
Streets and branch stores in Wilmington, Haverford, Plymouth Meeting and 
Moorestown. 

The company also operated a design and production factory in the city. 

Active in civic and social affairs, he was a member of the Riomar Country Club and 
was former commodore of the Riomar Bay Yacht Club in Florida. 

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Stewart Caldwell; sons, James M. Jr., Leonard Z. and 
Scott L.; a daughter, Sandra Brown; a stepson, Tristram C. Colket 4th; a 
stepdaughter, Leslie S. Colket; five grandchildren, and a brother. 

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Trinity Episcopal Church in Vero 
Beach. 

The family has asked that any memorials be directed to the Indian River County 
Volunteer Ambulance Squad, 1729 17th Ave., Vero Beach, 32960. Edition: FINAL
