San Francisco Chronicle (CA) - August 5, 1987
Deceased Name: Priscilla Blesch McKown
Private services were held yesterday afternoon in Burlingame for Priscilla Blesch
McKown, whose herbariums are displayed in prominent scientific collections. She died
at Mills Memorial Hospital in Burlingame last Friday after a long illness. She was 87.

A native of New Brighton, Pa., Mrs. McKown graduated from Carnegie-Mellon

A devotee of the seashore, Mrs. McKown started collecting sea algae and pressing it
onto paper, which she made into note paper, memo cards and bridge tallies and then
sold.

She later took a course on marine algae at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station at
Pacific Grove and then lectured and started making herbariums, which are mounted,
dried plants used for botanical study and display.

Her mounted works are on display at the National Academy of Sciences in
Washington, D.C., the California Academy of Sciences, Coyote Point Museum in San
Mateo County and at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area headquarters.

Mrs. McKown is survived by her husband, Paul McKown, of Hillsborough; daughter
