Man Takes 14 Hostages With Toy Gun

NEW YORK — A man involved in a custody dispute with his ex-wife went to the 
American Telephone & Telegraph Co. office where she works Monday and took 14 
people hostage with a toy gun and a fake hand grenade.
Police said Bill Saunders, of Princeton, N.J., surrendered on the 25th floor of the 
lower Manhattan building about noon, 2 1/2 hours after the incident began. No one 
was injured.
Chief of Patrol Robert Johnston said 12 hostages escaped and two were released by 
Saunders, who had come to the office to see his ex-wife, Geraldine.
But Deputy Commissioner Alice McGillion said the woman was in Family Court in 
Trenton seeking an order of protection to keep her husband away.
Saunders was charged with unlawful imprisonment, reckless endangerment and 
weapons counts, police said.
