Donovan Leo Banks, age 76, of Mattoon passed away at 5:35 p.m. on Thursday, July 
9, 2015 at his residence.

Funeral services honoring his life will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 13. 2015 at 
Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 with Reverend 
Ed Stephens officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Roselawn Cemetery. 
Visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 
12, 2015 at Schilling Funeral Home.

Don was born on June 19, 1939 in Mattoon, IL the son of Elmer and Hazel (Heritage) 
Banks.  He married Brenda K. Freeman on May 8, 1960. She preceded him in death on 
March 23, 2009.

Survivors include his five sons, Stephen (Sharon) Banks of Peoria, AZ, David (Brenda 
Kaye) Banks of Imperial, MO, Jeffrey Banks of Mattoon, IL, Michael (Lori) Banks of 
Charleston, IL and Timothy (Christine) Banks of Mattoon, IL; adopted children, Kim 
Spink of Vienna, IL and Donny (Becky) Gravil of Mattoon, IL; sisters, Evelyn Christine 
Bolton and Beulah Banks both of Texas; nine grandchildren and four great 
grandchildren.

Don served honorably in the United States Navy from 1958-1962. He spent his career 
working as a Bricklayer for the Local 8 and retired in 2004. Don was an accomplished 
woodworker and known for his exceptional ability to create most anything. Some of 
the things he created were clocks, furniture, trains, a tank and a horseless carriage. 
Several of his projects were in local town parades. Don was a member of the New 
Mercy Church. Don had a natural ability and sense of humor to quickly turn strangers 
into friends.
