Hazel Irene Gray Hazel was born in 1921 in Van Nuys, California, to Charles and Ida 
Mae Cramer. After residing in Saratoga for many years, she passed away on May 21, 
2009, at the age of 87. Her family meant everything to Hazel. She had a strong and 
loving marriage to her husband, Reed A. Gray. She loved her children dearly: her 
daughter Millie Smith, deceased, son-in-law Smitty Smith, deceased, and her son Paul 
Smith. Hazel adored her seven grandchildren: Paul Ryan Smith, Rebecca Smith Bates, 
Cristina Smith Berry, Jonathan Smith, Sheryl Eden, Craig Smith and Hugh Smith. She 
enjoyed her step-grandchildren, too: Joel, Aaron and Daniel Smith, Alanna Cluff, and 
Jeremy, Christopher, Jonathan, Benjamin and Joshua Stiborek. Her stepchildren were 
also a part of her life: Arlene and Richard Miller, and Linda and John Stiborek. Hazel 
lived a gentle, generous, loving, adventurous and hard-working life. Her active 
lifestyle included being a pilot and a member of the Coast Guard search and rescue 
team. Her membership in, and temple service for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter 
Day Saints, were important aspects of her life. Among her other interests were: 
cooking for family gatherings, dancing, boating, swimming, photography, and world 
travel. She received awards for her photos from the Los Gatos-Saratoga Camera Club, 
and was a member of the San Jose Movie Club. Of particular interest to her was 
researching her family history. Education was a major pursuit; she obtained her BA, 
MA, and EdD. Her career included work as: an educator of hearing-impaired children, 
a school and college administrator, a co-author, a licensed Educational Psychologist, 
and a licensed Marriage Family and Child Counselor. A memorial service was held at 
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in Saratoga. Arrangements provided 
by ALAMEDA FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.
