Ruth Dixon: Memorial service set for long-time resident 


The life of long-time Gurnee resident Ruth Dixon, who passed away in Vernon Hills 
April 20 at age 95, will be remembered Saturday. 

 A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at Gurnee Community Church, 4555 Old 
Grand Ave. 

 "It is a loss to us. She will be sorely missed," Pastor Christopher Stephens said of 
Dixon. "This weekend will be a celebration of her life." 

 Dixon had a long list of community involvement. 

 Upon graduating from Augustana College in Rock Island in 1931, Dixon took a 
position with Warren Township High School, teaching English literature and physical 
education. 

 According to her family, Dixon arrived by train to her new post and found the son of a 
school board member waiting to help her with her luggage. Five years later, Dixon 
married that gentleman, retired Judge LaVerne A. Dixon, who died in 2004. The couple 
was married 68 years. 

 Jill Martin, vice president of the Warren Township Historical Society, said the 
organization had videotaped more than 30 of the older township residents and many 
mentioned Dixon. 

 "Several reported that Ruth Olson (Dixon) was their favorite teacher, and indicated 
that LaVerne Dixon was a lucky man," Martin said. 

 The historical society also has video of Ruth and LaVerne Dixon talking about their 
lives in Gurnee. 

 Dixon, a member of the historical society, proofread and edited the "History of Warren 
Township" by Edward Lawson. Martin recalled that Dixon helped answer her questions 
about material for another Gurnee and Warren Township historical book, which was 
published this spring by Arcadia Press. 

 Dixon is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, John M. (Sharon) Dixon, of 
Winnetka, and Lowell (Mariclaire) Dixon, of Lake Forest; four grandchildren and one 
great-grandchild.
