Janet Lucille Bates, 91, of Charleston died Thursday, February 5, 2009, at CAMC 
General Hospital. 

 She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston, and a graduate of 
the University of Illinois, where she was an active member of the Kappa Delta sorority. 
She also taught school for some time in Genoa, Ill. Janet was also a former Girl Scout 
leader in Charleston. 

 Janet and her husband were 50-year residents of Charleston, moved to Florida for 10 
years, then returned to Charleston. 

 She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Edna Forman Doerschuk; and 
bro-thers, Richard and Herbert Doerschuk 

 Surviving are her loving husband of 66 years, Jack Bates; son and daughter-in-law, 
David Lee and Mary Kathleen Bates of Fountain Valley, Calif.; daughter and son-in-
law, Barbara Sue and William Luberger of Fayetteville; six grandchildren, 14 great-
grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. 

 Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South 
Charleston, with the Rev. Gary McGrew officiating. Burial will be in Tyler Mountain. 
Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. 

 Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the mortuary. 

 In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's 
Association, 1111 Lee St. E., Charleston, WV 25301.
