Jack M. Bates, 94, South Charleston died Monday, April 12, 2010, at the home of his 
daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Wil-liam Luberger of Fayetteville, after a long 
illness. 

 He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston, and a graduate 
of the University of Illinois. Jack was retired from Union Carbide with 40 years of 
service. 

 He and his wife, Janet, were married in 1942 for 66 years until she passed away in 
February 2009. 

 He and Janet enjoyed warm weather and decided to move to Florida in 1995, but 
returned to West Virginia in 2006. 

 In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Lila 
Bates; brother, Charles E. Bates; and sister, Dixie Lee Meiner. 

 In addition to his daughter and son-in-law, Jack is survived by his son and daughter-
in-law, David Lee and Kathy Bates of Fountain Valley, Calif.; six grandchildren, 12 
great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. 

 Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston 
with the Rev. Gary McGrew officiating. Burial will be in Tyler Mountain Memory 
Gardens, Cross Lanes. 

 Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South 
Charleston.
