NICHOLS, Constance Moeller
Constance Moeller Nichols, of Essex, formerly of West Hartford, died on Monday, 
(June 11, 2001) at Hartford Hospital. Born in New York City, NY in 1916 to Dr. Henry 
Moeller and Alice Moeller, she attended Dalton and St. Agatha's Episcopal School. 
After graduating from The Columbia University School of Nursing in 1940, she became 
a head nurse at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York. During the war years, 
she married, moved to West Hartford, and volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Bank. 
The following decades were lovingly devoted to raising her family. In 1969 she and 
her late ex-husband, Dr. Frederick Nichols, volunteered at the Mount Selinda Mission 
Hospital in Rhodesia, where she served as nurse and educator. Upon returning home, 
she became an active volunteer at The Woman's Exchange of West Hartford, which 
led to a 12-year career as its assistant manager and buyer. Connie had been a member 
of Town & County Club, Hartford Golf Club and was a 50-year member of the Asylum 
Hill Congregational Church in Hartford. For the past ten years, Connie has been living 
at Essex Meadows in Essex, helping at The Woman's Exchange of Old Lyme and the 
Florence Griswold Museum. Her thoughtful ways and warm smile will be remembered by 
her many friends. She leaves her loving daughters, Constance Nichols Detwiller of 
Sudbury, MA, and Marcia Nichols Trook of Weston, MA; their husbands Charles 
Detwiller and David Trook; her four grandchildren, Chad Detwiller, Kimberly Detwiller 
Burgess, Benjamin Trook and Whitney Trook; and her niece, Alison Forbis. A memorial 
service will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2 p.m., at The Old Lyme Congregational 
Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Asylum Hill or Old Lyme Congregational 
Churches or the Florence Griswold Museum are appreciated.
