Frederick Lewis Nichols, M.D., 83, of Bloomfield, died Tuesday, (March 21, 2000) at 
Duncaster. Born on February 5, 1917, in Clinton, NY, to the late Arthur B. Nichols and 
Carrie P. Nichols, he graduated in 1938 with an A.B. from Hamilton College and in 
1942, with an M.D. from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. 
From 1944-1946 he served in World War II as captain, earning a Bronze Star. 
Following the war, he was a resident at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City, 
andbeganprivate practice in Hartford in 1947, specializing in Internal Medicine and 
Endocrinology until his retirement in 1991. He served as senior attending physician in 
Internal Medicine at Hartford Hospital, consultant of Endocrinology at the Institute of 
Living, as secretary on The Hartford Hospital Medical Staff and as Chairman of the 
C.C.U. Committee at Hartford Hospital. He was honored with The Laureat Award by 
the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Nichols 
willberemembered by his patients for his personal dedication and sense of caring, and 
for his excellent skill as a diagnostician. As a member of the Asylum Hill 
Congregational Church, he served on many committees, chairing the Board of Christian 
Serviceandthe Board of Deacons. His commitment to medicine and helping others 
drew him to Africa as volunteer physician at the Mount Silinda Mission Hospital in 
Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1969. There he treated tropical and parasitic diseases, 
and taught theresident staff as well. Upon his return to Hartford, he urged others to 
donate funds and equipment to Mount Silinda. He leaves his loving wife, Anne B. 
Nichols; his daughters, Constance (Nichols) Detwiller and her husband, Charles of 
Sudbury, MA,andMarcia (Nichols) Trook and her husband, P. David of Weston, MA; 
his four grandchildren, Chad Detwiller, Kimberly (Detwiller) Burgess, Benjamin Trook 
and Whitney Trook; his three stepchildren, Ruthven Wodell and his wife, Nancy of 
Pottstown, PA,KatharineWodell of New York City, NY, and Jessie Wodell Roorda of 
Sydney, Australia; his brother, Ralph Nichols of Stamford; and his former wife, 
Constance M. Nichols of Essex. A memorial service will be held at the Asylum Hill 
Congregational Church inHartford on Monday, March 27, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, 
contributions may be made to the Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum 
Ave., Hartford, 06105, and to the Duncaster Residents' Fund, 40 Loeffler Rd., 
Bloomfield, 06002.
