ARNEST, Gene B. Was born to Alfred James Rhaines and Sallie Taylor Rhaines on 
Jan. 11, 1924 in Long Branch, New Jersey, and passed on of natural causes in 
Sacramento on Mar. 5, 2007. With her twin sister, Gene and Jane Rhaines were 
awarded the "Most Beautiful Twins" trophy in the 39th Asbury Park Baby Parade in 
1930. When her father lost his engineering position with Thomas Alva Edison during 
the Depression, the family moved to Los Angeles. Relocating to Sacramento in 1959, 
she worked at Aerojet-General Corporation. A voracious reader, Gene immersed 
herself in period novels, Civil War history, and Hollywood biographies. She was an 
avid fan of classic movies, opera and loved gadgets. An expert knitter and solver of 
crosswords, she was also an accomplished equestrian and swimmer, and literally roller 
skated into her early 70's with grace and style. Widow of Ret. Capt. Howard L. Arnest, 
Gene is survived and will be greatly missed by daughters Joan Flaherty and Carole 
Hamilton, son in-law Gerald Flaherty, grandchildren Barbara Harkey, Gary Haley, Julie 
Baxter, Chuck Baxter, Jeynie Jacob, great grandchildren Mallory, Craig and Joshua, 
and nephew James Stauffer. Interment will take place at a future date at Golden Gate 
National Cemetery, San Bruno, CA.
