Katharine was one of nine children born to Clark Breiding Scott and Catherine 
Charlotte Gilmore. After graduating from Bethany College in Wheeling, West Virginia, 
she taught two years at Landerwood College in South Carolina, and then came to 
teach at the old Nottingham School in Cleveland. She taught French and English.

In 1911 she became society editor for The Plain Dealer. Two years later, she resigned 
and opened a public relations office until she married Jay Alvin Higbee on August 2, 
1917. Together, they had three children; Katharine, who only lived a few days, Ruth 
and Louise. When her children were grown, she began doing free-lance market 
research surveys and worked until she was 90.

Katharine’s mother died just one week shy of her 97th birthday. She followed in her 
mother’s footsteps by living to be 96 years, 9 months and 6 days young.
