Robert D. ADAIR, 1857-1937
President of the furniture company that bore his name, which was one of Xenia's
oldest retail stores, he was also president of two different financial institutions,
Citizens' National Bank and Home Building & Savings Co. He was born and raised in a
suburb of Pittsburgh, and came to Xenia while a traveling salesman for a glass
company. Adair and his brother-in-law William Nichols bought out the furniture store of
Wilson & Lindsey in 1886, which stood at the same location on North Detroit St. In
1887, Nichols died, and the R.D. Adair Co. was born. Adair's finally closed for good in
1987 after many remodeling projects and an expansion; the building was demolished in
1999. Not only was he in the financial and business worlds, he served on the city
board of education for 18 years. 3 sons survived, and a sister; his wife Clarissa died in
1936.
