Daphne Greenwood Bettle, 91, of Sarasota, formerly of Key West, Fla., and 
Philadelphia, Pa., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011. 

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at the Church of 
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 7001 Beneva Ave., Sarasota. 

Burial will be at noon Wednesday, March 2, 2011, in the Southern Gardens Cemetery, 
on Big Coppitt Key, Fla. 

Daphne is survived by her daughter, Daphne Lewis; two sons, Griscom "Chip" and 
Samuel; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. 

Daphne Bettle was born in Norristown, Pa., in 1919 and educated in Germany and 
England before World War II. 

She met her husband of 65 years, Griscom Bettle Jr., fell in love and was married at 
age 19 and shortly thereafter was a wartime bride. 

Daphne and Gris made their home in Wynnewood, Pa., and raised four children. 

On a whim after a trip to Brazil, Daphne bought an 1850s home in downtown Key West 
and then told Gris what she had done. 

They moved to Key West for 38 years, where Gris became a world-renowned 
shallow-water fishing guide and Daphne raised, exhibited and sold orchids, palms and 
other exotic plants. 

Daphne finally retired to Sugarloaf Key and then late in life moved to Sarasota, Fla., to 
be closer to her children. 

Daphne was an accomplished horticulturist who once won "Best-in-Show" at the 
Philadelphia International Flower Show, now the largest indoor flower show in the 
world. 

Her 2-acre garden in Sugarloaf Key was showcased in a full-page article in the 
Sunday Miami Herald, just before Hurricane Georges destroyed the garden with 5 feet 
of saltwater. Page: 3A
