Patrick S. Pasquariello Jr., 85, of Bala Cynwyd and Longport, N.J., a pediatrician who
spent his 54-year career at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, died Saturday, Aug. 29,
of heart failure at Lankenau Hospital.
Dr. Pasquariello was a master clinician, recognized for his ability to arrive at a
diagnosis in children with complex illnesses while comforting them and their parents.
He taught hundreds of medical students and residents the art of medicine by example,
modeling how a kind and careful professional should proceed.
A day after Children's announced his death on Facebook, the online page was flooded
with photos and tributes from families whose children were patients of "Dr. Pat."
"I have nothing but great things to say about this man, his level of compassion and his
gentle way of attending to children," wrote parent Sonya Padilla Salinas. "He will be
missed."
His daughter Caroline, an anesthesiologist at Children's, said, "His manner was gentle
and unassuming, yet his effect was strong and lasting. He has touched so many lives
in so many ways."
The son of Caroline and Patrick S. Pasquariello Sr., he grew up in North Philadelphia
above his father's medical office. He had two younger sisters.
He graduated from St. Joseph's Preparatory School in 1948, St. Joseph's University in
1952, and Jefferson Medical College in 1956. He was a lieutenant in the Navy.
Dr. Pasquariello began his career as an intern at Children's in 1961 and served as
chief resident under C. Everett Koop, who later became surgeon general. Dr.
Pasquariello joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in
1962 and was named a professor of pediatrics in 1990.
He held numerous leadership roles at Children's, including director of the Office of
Continuing Medical Education and interim chief of the Division of General Pediatrics.
In 1989, he created the Children's diagnostic and complex care center, a program
designed to aid children who had difficult-to-diagnose problems. Named after Dr.
Pasquariello in 2009, it serves as a place of hope for families and referring doctors.
He also served as director of the spina bifida program and as general pediatric
consultant for the "22q and you" center, which cares for children with a chromosome
deletion syndrome, and the cranial-facial reconstruction clinic.
Dr. Pasquariello met Mae Agnes through his sister when both attended Penn. She was
from South Philadelphia. They married in 1956. The couple had three children and
settled in Bala Cynwyd.
He was always supportive of his wife and children and encouraged them in their
education and athletic aspirations, his family said. He loved to collect stamps, garden,
and cheer on the Eagles.
Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by daughter Ann Agnes; son Patrick S.
III; four grandchildren; a sister; and nieces and nephews. Another sister died earlier.
A visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter
and Paul, 18th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, is to be followed by a
Funeral Mass at 7. Interment is private.
