obit of Patrick S. Pasquariello
Patrick S. Pasquariello Sr., 90, who for 65 years treated his patients with a dose of
humor to put them at ease, died of heart failure Wednesday at his home in East Falls.
Dr. Pasquariello, who was born in Dupont, near Scranton, started out as a pharmacist
and used his earnings to pay his way through medical school.
He graduated from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Science in 1924, completed
one year of premedical training at Syracuse University, and graduated from Jefferson
Medical College in 1929.
He then joined St. Joseph's Hospital, where he remained on staff for 50 years. In the
mid-1950s, Dr. Pasquariello decided to specialize in internal medicine.
''My father had a great sense of humor,'' said his son, Patrick Jr., a pediatrician. ''He
was a great storyteller, and he could recite many jokes with a philosophical twist.
Patients would come to his office looking glum, but they would come out smiling.
There was no extra charge for the jokes.''
His son said Dr. Pasquariello's credo was simple when dispensing treatments: ''It's not
the medicine you give, but it's how you give it to them.''
Dr. Pasquariello delivered hundreds of babies, his son said, and treated such
celebrities as Philadelphia Athletics Hall of Famer Jimmy Foxx and the late Mayor
James Hugh Joseph Tate.
He received many awards, but the one of which he was perhaps proudest was the
honor he received in 1984 from the National Italian American Association Foundation
as a one of three generations of physicians with his son and one of his
granddaughters, Caroline Pasquariello-Fuchs, also a pediatrician.
In his free time, Dr. Pasquariello enjoyed photography and traveled around the world.
Other survivors are two daughters, Lucille P. Canuso and Jeanine P. Muniz; nine other
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Bridget's Church, 3673 Midvale Ave.,
with a Funeral Mass following at 11 a.m.
Burial will be at Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd.
