Mass of Christian Burial was to be celebrated today for John J. Ciletta Jr., a
policeman's son who grew up in South Philadelphia and was among the 37 sailors who
died May 17 in the Iraqi missile attack on the USS Stark. He was 21.

Ciletta was raised in the Packer Park neighborhood. His late father was a Philadelphia
police officer who moved to Atlantic City to work for Harrah's Casino.

The younger Ciletta was graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1984.

He enlisted in the Navy in October 1984 and took his boot training at Great Lakes
Naval Air Station in Illinois. Because of his interest in missiles and electronics, he was
transferred to the Naval base at Mayport, Fla., where he became a petty officer 3rd
class. He was assigned to the Stark in April 1985.

Ciletta is survived by his wife, Nancy; his mother, Kathleen Ciletta; a sister, Michelle,
and his grandparents, Vincent and Rose D'Ambrosio.

Mass will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. today in Christ, King of Peace Roman Catholic
Church, 26th and Wharton streets. A para-liturgical service will be held at the church
at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9:30 tonight at the Carto
Funeral Home, 2212-14 S. Broad St.

Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.
