MARMADUKE DE THWENG, son and heir, was called a royal knight banneret in 1260 
and 1262, when he was granted robes by the King. In 1262 he went on pilgrimage to 
Santiago. He was summoned in 1264 to join the King under arms and was captured at 
the battle of Lewes by Hugh le Despenser, to whom he owed a ransom of 700 m. He 
was summoned for service against the Scots in 1258 and against the Welsh in 1264; 
and in 1277 and 1282 service from his lands was proffered at the muster for Edward 
I's campaigns in Wales. He was again summoned for service in Wales in 1283. In 
1257 he was granted the right to hold markets and fairs in Lund, Thwing and Coatham. 
In 1272 he obtained jure uxoris the manors of Danby, Brotton and Skinningrove, 
together with the town of Yarm, Yorks. On 28 June 1283 he [or his son] was 
summoned to attend the King at Shrewsbury, 30 September, but he may have died 
before that date.

He married, about 1242, Lucy, 2nd daughter of Piers DE BRUS, lord of Skelton, 
Yorks, by Hawise, sister and coh. of William DE LANCASTER (died 1246), lord of 
Kendal, Westmorland. He died 1282-1284 (b). Lucy was living, Easter, 1282.

(b) He is named as a witness in 1280 and his son Marmaduke answered for his service 
in 1282. He was dead in 1284. The fact that he was summoned to Shrewsbury and for 
service against the Welsh in 1283 is not adequate proof of his being alive at this date. 
His name is indexed in Parliament many times after 1283, but this is clearly and error 
for his son. L'Anson says that Marmaduke was buried in the north aisle of the chancel 
of Guisborough Priory, where there is a window bearing the Thweng arms; but no 
evidence is given. He had 5 sons: Robert (dvp), Marmaduke, who succeeded hime, 
John, Gawain, and Edmund. L'Anson says that Marmaduke had 4 more brothers, 
Richard, Peter, William, and Roger, together with 5 sisters, Hillary, Matilda, Alice, 
Joanna, and Margery. Ord does not mention John, calls Edmund and Margery, Edward 
and Maria. Neither Ord nor l'Anson give any evidence for their statements. The 
Fundatorum Historiae of Guisborough Priory says that Marmaduke and Lucy de Brus 
had 9 sons and 5 daughters, the number given by l'Anson, but gives not names.
