English Kills, a professed Quaker, elected to the office of Overseer of Newtown.

born at Newtown. but also says he was born in England and was a first settler at 
Newtown 
James Way came from England and was a first settler in Newton,Long Island. 
The date of his birth and immigration were not found. 
In 1656 the settlers bought from the Indians the land they occupied,paying one shilling 
per acre. 
The deed shows that James Way paid two shillings. 
In 1852 James Riker published his "Annals of Newton" in which it is stated that James 
Way died October 2,1685. He left a will that was probated in November 1685, a copy 
of which was found in "New York Historical Society's Collection of Wills". It contains 
bequests to his wife, Ede, and children.

Under the appleation Waye appeared on the records of Someraetshire as early as 15th 
century. 
An early and reputable settler at the English Kills where acquired a large estate.
He was a useful man and servered as an Overseer,and embraced the principles of the 
Quakers which his 
descendents have generally followed.
