Notton, co. York, 5 Mar 1355/6. [Magna Charta Sureties]

Note: Ancestral Roots states that John was slain at Crecy while Magna Charta 
Sureties states he died at Notton, Yorkshire. Both have the same date. Since the 
Battle of Crecy was in 1346, I assume MCS is correct.

BARONY OF DARCY (II) 1347

JOHN (DARCY), LORD DARCY, called le fitz, and afterwards de Knayth', son and heir 
He had a grant, 1 August 1341, of £40 a year to him and his heirs, for his long and 
gratuitous services. Appointed Keeper of the manor of Burstwick, co. York, with its 
members in cos. York and Lincoln, and Escheator in Holderness, for life, 1 October 
1344. These offices were regranted to him, 16 March 1345/6, but the King could not 
dispense with his constant attendance, and appointed a deputy, 20 March 1345/6. 
One of the King's Council. He was granted an annuity of £200 for life, to maintain 
himself as a banneret, 15 July 1346, at La Hogue. Was at the battle of Crecy, and at 
the siege of Calais, being in the King's retitiue. He was aged 30 and more at his 
father's death and did homage and had livery of his inheritance, June 1347. Appointed 
Constable of the Tower of London for life, June 1347, but was permitted to grant the 
office away, 15 March 1351/2. Appointed a commissioner to treat with the Cardinals 
concerning peace with France, 25 Scptember 1347. He was summoned to a Great 
Council 15 July 1353, and to Parliament from 20 November 1348 to 15 March 1353/4, 
by writs directed Johanni Darcy de Knayth'.

He married, 1stly, before 8 July 1332, Alianore, daughter of Sir Robert DE HOLAND, of 
West Derby, co. Lancaster, Yoxall, co. Stafford, &c. [LORD HOLAND], by Maud, 2nd 
daughter and coheir of Sir Alan LA ZOUCHE, of Ashby, co. Leicester [LORD 
ZOUCHE]. She died s.p.m., before 21 November 1341. He married, 2ndly (disp. from 
the Bishop of Lincoln, 7 Jan. 1344/5), Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir Nicholas DE 
MENILLE, of Whorlton in Cleveland [LORD MEINILL], by Alice, daughter of Sir William 
DE Ros, of Helmsley, co. York [LORD Ros]. The King took his fealty, and they had 
livery of her lands, 10 October 1348. On 22 April 1353 he received a pardon for all 
homicides, felonies, robberies, &c., for all oppressions by colour of any office he had 
held, for all trespasses of vert and venison, and of any consequent outlawries, and for 
all arrears and debts. He died 5 March 1355/6, at Notton, in Royston parish, co. York, 
and was buried in Guisborough Priory. His widow, the King having taken her homage 
and fealty, had livery of Whorlton, &c., 1 May, and her dower was ordered to be 
assigned, 4 July 1356. She married, before 18 November 1356 (pardon for marrying 
without Iic., 30 Oct. 1357), as 1st wife, Sir Piers de MAULEY, le sisme, of Mulgrave, 
co. York [LORD MAULEY]. Her dower was again ordered to be assigned, [IRL] 30 
October 1357 and [ENG] 20 June 1358. She, who was born 15 October 1331, at 
Whorlton, and bap. there, 19 July 1368, aged 36. He died 19 or 20 March 1382/3. 
Will, directing his burial to be in the Church of the Friars Minors at Doncaster, dated at 
his manor of Burgh near Watton, co. York, 8 March 1381/2. [Complete Peerage IV:58
