BARONY OF MEINILL (II)

ELIZABETH, de jure, according to modern doctrine, BARONESS MEINILL, daughter
and heir, born 15 October 1331, at Whorlton, and baptized there. On 15 February
1341/2 William Fraunk was appointed to seize her body, wherever he could find her,
and keep her in custody until the King, to whom her marriage belonged, should give
order. Her marriage had been granted on the preceding 21 November, in consideration
of his father's good service and his own in staying by the King's side, to John DARCY
le fitz, whom she married circa 1344/5. In 1346 the Prior and convent of Guisborough
recognised the right of John Darcy le fitz and Elizabeth his wife as patrons of a moiety
of the priory, according to the grant made by Bartholomew Fanacourt and Lucy his
wife. On 10 October 1348 she and her husband were granted seisin of her father's
lands held in chief in cos. York and Northumberland, as she had proved her age, and
her husband had done fealty for all the lands which Nicholas de Meinill had held in
chief. John, Lord Darcy, died 5 March 1355/6. His widow married, before 18
November 1356, Sir Piers DE MAULEY le sisme [LORD MAULEY]. She died 9 July
1368. See fuller particulars sub DARCY and MAULEY. At her death any hereditary
Barony of Meinill which may be supposed to have been created by the writ of
summons of 1336 to Nicholas de Meinill became united with DARCY, which see.
