MRS. VIRGINIA THERESA ROMEO, 87, of 3701 Old Leeds Road died Thursday. Mrs. 
Romeo, a native of Naples, Italy, founded Romeo’s Restaurant. She lived in 
Birmingham 87 years and was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. 
Funeral will be at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at Valley Chapel and at 9:30 at the church with 
burial in Elmwood. Rosary will be said at 8 tonight at the funeral home. Survivors 
include a son, F. L. Romeo, Birmingham. – The Birmingham News, 12 Jan 1973, p. 41


NOTE: "Grandmama" Romeo was a marvellous cook who – with her husband Michael – 
founded Romeo's at 421 20th Street South in Birmingham, Alabama. She established 
the restaurant’s original version of one of the great Italian comfort dishes, Parmigiana 
(also known as Eggplant Parmesan), as well as ensuring that her wonderful food could 
always be paired with a suitable vintage – despite local “blue laws” – by serving it in 
lovely teacups on Sunday.
