Worcester - E. Persis Rayner Slayter, 93, died April 24th, 2014 the same day as her 
husband of 65 years, Robert Slayter, in Knollwood Nursing Facility, part of Briarwood 
Retirement Community, where she and her husband resided for thirty years. Persis 
moved to Worcester from Prince Edward Island at the age of two, where she was born 
the youngest child of Edith Knox Rayner and Elijah H. Rayner. Her two brothers, E. 
Harvey Rayner and H. Calhoun Rayner, and her four sisters, Betty P. Rayner, Virginia 
Colebrook, Geraldine Chase and Eleanor Hagstrom Nylen, predeceased her. She was 
a devoted aunt to many nieces and nephews, and also leaves many grand nieces, 
nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Persis and her husband lived in Worcester for most of their lives, being active 
members of First Baptist Church since 1953. After working in a flower shop and at Harr 
Motors, Persis served as Assistant Treasurer to First Baptist Church, and enjoyed 
many years of volunteer work, over 25 years at Memorial Hospital, and many years at 
her church and Briarwood Retirement Community. She also enjoyed travels with her 
husband to many parts of the country, including many winters on Hilton Head Island 
and New Smyrna, Florida.

A Memorial Service for Robert and Persis Slayter will be Monday, April 28th at 11 am 
in First Baptist Church, 111 Park Avenue, Worcester. A reception will follow at the 
Briarwood Community Building. 65 Briarwood Circle, Worcester. There are no calling 
hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Briarwood Retirement 
Community Residents Assistance Fund and sent to the Briarwood Retirement 
Community, 65 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, MA 01606.
