JAMES H. WELLS, born 14 January, 1841 at Sheffield, England, the first child of
L.D.S. parentage to be born in that city. Migrated with his parents to Utah. Married,
Lydia Lucinda Carter, 10 October, 1877. He was with the Lot Smith party which came
exploring as far south as Circleville, Piute Countv, Utah in 1873. He was an Indian
War veteran. Came to Joseph with his parents in 1875. He met his future wife here.
With his father he bought goods and opened up a store. He followed that interest the
rest of his life, being connected with most of the mercantile establishments of the town
until his death. He was the first full time L.D.S. missionary to be sent out from the
Joseph Ward, serving in the Southern States from 1880 to 1882. He was the first ward
clerk. Both he and Mrs. Wells were enterprising and outstanding in the community,
being especially interested in any movement which would improve the living conditions
or the cultural aspects of their surroundings. Mr. Wells was a director and a staunch
supporter of the Otter Creek Reservoir. The Wells Irrigation Canal Company was
named for him because he was one of the largest stock holders of the company. After
his death, 12 December, 1912, his wife continued to be active in public works and
