1981 book:
John was a blacksmith, a farmer, and a shopkeeper. He shoed horses for the Indians, 
who esteemed him very much. He was six feet, two inches tall, 200 pounds, and had 
few gray hairs when he died. He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends; he 
was respected for his honesty and reserve.
	John and Elizabeth were members of the Religious Society of Friends and 
later joined the Methodist Church. In 1830, John and his family left Frederick Co., Md., 
and travelled across the mountains to Hopewell Twp., Seneca Co., Ohio. His 
descendants still have several of the chairs and china tea sets that John took with 
him on his westward trek. John arrived in Seneca Co., Ohio, in June 1830, with his 
father-in-law Thomas Derr, Elizabeth's sister Margaret, and Joseph Heltebrake. He 
purchased a farm one-half mile north of Tiffin, Ohio, on the state road; in 1837, he 
moved one-half mile to the west to the farm that as of 1981 was still owned by his 
descendants.
