Elizabeth was a nurse, president and founder of the Western Sanitary Fair, and 
president of the Home of the Friendless. She was considered one of Cincinnati's 
prominent civic leaders.
 Elizabeth and George were married by John Swift, Mayor of Philadelphia, Pa.; the 
original of their marriage certificate is in the collections of the Cincinnati Historical 
Society. Elizabeth and George met in 1836 while she was attending a boarding school 
in the suburbs of Phila., Pa.
	George graduated in 1835 from the University of Pennsylvania Medical 
School. From 1838 until 1844, Elizabeth and George lived in Cleveland, Ohio, where 
he practiced medicine. In 1844, they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, because the climate 
of Cleveland was not suitable.In Cincinnati, George practiced medicine and lectured 
at the Miami School of Medicine. He was a founder and dean of the Miami Medical 
College, and wrote a medical textbook "Vede Mecum". In 1869 and 1870, George 
served as president of the American Medical Association. In 1873, he was made a 
Fellow of the Royal Obstetrical Society of London. George was a physician to Harriet 
Beecher Stowe. Several characters in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" were drawn from the 
Mendenhall household.
